About the Shelter

Front of the shelterIn its 32 years of service the Humane Society of Cambria County has been responsible for the rescue, care and sheltering of more than 129,000 stray and abused animals and unwanted pets. Founded in 1976 by Gail Suppes, it has grown to be an organization respected for its dedication to the welfare of companion animals.

We are the only licensed, open-entry shelter serving Johnstown and all of Cambria County, Pennsylvania. "Open-entry" means we accept stray as well as owner-surrendered companion animals. We will also accept animals that are elderly, pregnant, injured or those with health needs or behavior issues, regardless of their adoptability. Despite the extremely high numbers of homeless animals we take in each year, we still maintain a high permanent adoption rate. See animals currently available for adoption.

The Humane Society also provides services including dog licenses, public education, spay/neuter advocacy, cruelty investigations, and animal rescue operations. The shelter is run by our Director, Humane Police Officer, Staff and Volunteers who are dedicated to the cause of caring about animals. There are many staff and volunteer opportunities in which to get involved.
