Lost and Found Pets
Extensive assistance is provided to owners who have lost their pets in Cambria County and surrounding communities. Current lists of lost and found animals are maintained at the shelter. The staff checks all stray animals entering the shelter for any identification to assist in tracing the owner of the animal.
Lost Pet Prevention Tips
- Get a license. All dogs should have a current license. Not only is it the law, but should your pet be brought to a shelter, vital owner information will be instantly available. Cats should also be registered with the shelter for this reason.
- Keep a collar with identification on your pet at all times. This includes cats as well as dogs folks! A tag displaying your address and phone number along with license and vaccination tags is a must. Be sure your pet's collar fits snuggly enough not to be easily slipped off and that all tags are well-secured. Engraving "REWARD" on your pet's tag could increase the chances of a safe return.
- Never allow your pet to roam free outside. Dogs and cats can be injured or killed by cars and face many other dangers. They can also hurt or kill other animals or even your neighbors. Be a responsible pet owner and keep pets securely on a leash or run when outside.
- Never leave your pet outside unattended. Fences can be breached, ropes can break and collars can be slipped off and before you know it, you're frantically searching for your pet. Also, dogs and cats are unfortunately stolen from yards every day, never to return.
- Spay or neuter your pet. This can greatly reduce the urge to run away in search of a mate. It's also the responsible thing to do to help control the unwanted pet population.
- Secure your pet in the car. Never leave your pet unattended in a car with the windows down or in the bed of a truck. Not only is this dangerous due to accidents and heat, but fear and instinct can drive your pet to jump out and run away.
- Confine your pet when necessary. The probability of losing a pet increases during situations such as having a party, moving day, construction, or other non-routine events in which a pet could slip out a door or window unnoticed.  Closing your pet off in a separate room or a crate in these situations could save you hours or even weeks of stress, hoping to find your cherished pet.
- Be aware when your pet is afraid. Situations such as thunderstorms or fireworks can scare your pet to the point where he will do anything to get away.  Again, confining to a room or crate can be invaluable, not to mention comforting to your furry friend.
